From Student to Professional: My Journey in Anthony’s Lab
My time in Anthony’s lab was truly transformative. It was where I evolved from a student into a professional, and Anthony played a major role in that transition. He provided the kind of training and mentorship that shaped me into a competitive researcher, always keeping in mind my goal of becoming a faculty member.
What stood out most was his steady, thoughtful approach. Over time, we had countless one-on-one conversations about the practical side of academic life—how to give effective research presentations, design meaningful projects, write grants and manuscripts, mentor students, organize departmental events, choose the right students for a project, and manage a lab and team. These weren’t just lessons in science—they were lessons in leadership.
Anthony always emphasized the importance of balancing family and career. He never prioritized data at the expense of well-being. When I was on the faculty job market, he was incredibly supportive. He helped me tailor my research talks for different departments and gave me space during my interviews to navigate the process with confidence.
He also had a knack for staying current—constantly introducing new tools and techniques, and showing me and the lab how to apply them to our research questions in thoughtful, strategic ways. Looking back, I feel incredibly grateful to have had a mentor like Anthony. His guidance didn’t just prepare me for a job—it prepared me for a career.

This application got me my first in-person faculty interview — and Anthony submitted the reco letter mid-air while on a plane. Talk about high-flying support!
For my first Zoom interview for a faculty position, Anthony offered his office space, with a mini microphone, and left a note on his desk for me. Eventually, I was invited for an in-person interview at the same place as well.
